Paomagang Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous, K2pm, (33a)

Province:
Hubei

Type Locality and Naming

Jianghan Basin. The Paomagang Formation was erected by the Sanxian Stratigraphic Team of the Beijing College of Geology in 1959. The type locality for the designation is at Paomagang of the Dangyang County, Hubei. The reference section is from Sonjiazui of Yichang to Shilingzi of Dangyang, Hubei.

Lithology and Thickness

The Paomagang Formation is mainly represented by brown red and gray white sandstone and siltstone interbedded with purple red mudstone, occasionally with gray green siltstone and marl, with 2-3 beds of cuprous shale. The formation is in conformable contact with both the overlying and underlying strata. It is 537.5 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Fine-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base marked by brown red fine sandstone interbedded with purple red mudstone, with gray green siltstone and purple red thin-bedded shale is distinguished from the Honghuatao Fm marked by light bright red massive fine sandstone.

Upper contact

It top is bounded by the appearance of brown yellow and brown red gravel-bearing sandstone at the base of the Fangjiahe Fm.

Regional extent

The formation occurs in Dangyang, Jingmen, Yichang and Zhongqun of the Jianghan basin of central Hubei. It is basically persistent in lithology and ranges from 170 to 890 m in thickness, 500 m in general. It is called the Yuyang Fm in the Jianghan basin, the Fenshuiau Fm in the Changtao basin and the Jinjiang Fm in the Yuanma basin. It is in conformable contact with both the overlying and underlying strata. The lower part of the formation in the Yaqueling area of Yichang and the upper part in the Cihuasi of Dangyang are intercalated with thin-bedded gypsum, and the upper part of the formation in Dangyang, Jingmen, Yichang and Zhongqun is intercalated with 2-3 cuprous shale beds.
